APACHE MEDICINE BAGS Medicine Bag Apache medicine bags medicine bags

Medicine Bag

Traditional Native American medicine bags usually displayed the characteristic tribal designs of the craftsperson. The bags contained a variety of things the wearer considered to be spiritually significant to draw strength, healing, and protection.

Examples might be stones, plants, feathers, or many other items. Medicine bags were made in a variety of sizes for personal wear or to carry depending upon their use.

APACHE MEDICINE BAGS

You may want to consider wearing a medicine bag for the same reasons they were traditionally utilized. People often ask what they should consider carrying inside their medicine bag. Your medicine bag should represent what is significant to you. It could contain items that offer you protection, healing or strength.

The following are just a few examples that you might consider. Animal teeth, claws, or hair are often included. The item you choose would represent the power of that animal(s) in your medicine bag. Other articles to include might be feathers, stones from places you have traveled, religious medallions, a child`s tooth, or a spouse`s hair. Again, these are items through which you feel a close kinship or special power.

We design our medicine bags with simplicity and functionality in mind. I have worn medicine bags for many years and while fringe is pretty, it absorbs sweat and will break away from the medicine bag in short order when worn under your shirt. For this reason, our bags are not fringed.

Medicine bags made for Diizche Safari Adventures are handmade only by Chiricahua Apache women who are direct descendants from Cochise Stronghold. The bags are hand cut from commercially available deer hides and are hand branded with our logo (see our
logo information page ).

Next, the bags are hand sewn with artificial sinew. These bags have a hand braided neck band of artificial sinew with two metal cones and two brass beads attached. In addition, the bags are blessed with sweet grass and sage and contain a small peridot bead sewn into the interior. The peridot in these bags is hand mined on the San Carlos Apache Reservation by Apache tribal members.

These medicine bags are not mass produced, take many hours to create, and are of a very limited availability. Because all work is done by hand, their appearance varies slightly from bag to bag and may contain slight branding imperfections. These bags are very unique and should be worn with pride.

Approximate bag size (Teardrop shaped): 3″ tall x 2 1/2″ wide at the middle and 1 1/8″ wide at the top. Item currently unavailable, inventory has been depleted. Please check back for availability. Purchase button will appear at the bottom of this page when stock is on hand.
