Apache Pottery
Hand Thrown and Pit-Fired

Larry Russell is a self-taught Chiricahua Apache potter. His pit-fired pottery is made in the traditional Apache bullet design. They are hand thrown, hand burnished with stones, and then pit- fired. The firing pit is hand dug and then fueled by hand using cedar wood and cattle dung. The smoke from the dung creates the beautiful black color of these pots.

These traditional Apache pots made by Larry are extremely limited in availability. The only other remaining pot, to our knowledge, may still be found today at a gallery in Sedona, Arizona. Larry is very ill and is no longer making pottery.
