The traditional burden basket was an item used daily in the Apache way of life. The basket was typically carried on one's back and utilized to collect or transport materials. Burden baskets were also used for crop cultivation and storage of food or other materials.

Burden baskets are still used today by the Apache, primarily during the sunrise ceremony. Our burden baskets are made by Apache craftswomen in Arizona. The baskets are made from locally collected vegetation and are decorated in buckskin leather (commercially sold hides) and metal cones.

Baskets are conical in shape and typically range in size from a few inches to several feet high. The weaving of these baskets is a dying art form made by very few craftswomen today. These are a piece of Western Apache history that will look beautiful in your home or office.
